DJI Phantom 4 Pro Review – A Superb Aircraft

DJI releases Phantom 4 Pro as an update to the predecessor, Phantom 4, coming with few improvements. We are already used with the DJI drone manufacturer releasing high-quality drones with high-resolution cameras and best performance.

Phantom 4 Pro best drone for aerial footage

Besides the major updates in the image quality, flight modes and the remote controller, the DJI team also changes the design of the Phantom 4, creating a more aerodynamic aircraft. Phantom 4 Pro has a better camera, shooting with a 20MP 1-inch sensor, able to record in 4K at 60 fps and shooting in burst shooting mode at 14 fps, providing smoother videos and images thanks to the obstacle detection system.

Different than other DJI models like Mavic, the camera is mounted on a 3-axis gimbal, locked under the drone. Moreover, to make it more visible while flying, especially by night, Phantom 4 Pro comes with some red and white flashing lights, like a real aircraft.

Easier fly – smoother footage

Making use of the FlightAutonomy system, Phantom 4 Pro automatically calculates the speed and the distance to any object found in its trajectory, to be able to avoid them with smoother maneuvers for a better video quality. The anti-collision system uses infrared and dual rear sensors, pointed in 5 different directions by making a 3D map of the environment.

Using the new controller that incorporates a screen will simplify the flight, as it’s not especially needed to connect your phone. The flight is improved as well by the extension of the battery life. Phantom 4 Pro is equipped with a 5870mAh 15.2V 4S battery which lasts now up to 30 minutes, when flying in optimal conditions. The battery can be replaced, you can also use a Pahntom 4 battery, and it’s charging in about 3 hours.

Better camera

The camera sensor on the Phantom 4 Pro has been increased up to four times to guarantee a better resolution, and thanks to the mechanical shutter, we can achieve better pictures when flying at high speeds, or when we try to catch moving objects. This shooter has been improved as well, with a speed of 1/8000 second, feature which eliminates the shutter distortion appearing in those fast moving pictures.

It’s actually the first DJI camera with a mechanical shooter.

The wide angle aperture camera has a powerful image processor which supports H.264 encoded 4K videos at 60fps, with a bitrate of 100Mbps and provides excellent image detail and sharpness, shooting with the 20 megapixels. FYI, the aperture can be adjusted between f2.8 and f11.

Phantom 4 Pro is optimized for audiovisual productions, allowing you to record videos in resolutions from 1920 × 1080 to 4096 × 2160 at 60fps. The video processing system enables DCI 4K and the results are clearly seen in the produced videos.

Phantom 4 Pro intelligent flight

Flying a DJI drone becomes more and more easier with new releases. The sensors network located in the front, rear and bottom makes Phantom 4 Pro capable of flying and avoiding obstacles even at high speeds, without the use of the GPS, requesting minimal handling skills.

The new improved flight system eases the flight, making use of several modes:

  • Draw Mode – user is able to draw a path on the screen, for the drone to follow it, maintaining the altitude
  • ActiveTrack Mode – the drone can recognize any defined subject in its route
  • TapFly Mode – the user just has to tap on the screen to define a flying direction
  • Return to Home Mode – in the case of low battery, or losing the view of the aircraft, it will automatically return to where the user is
  • Gesture Mode – nice to take selfie shots based on the subject’s gestures

Phantom 4 Pro can fly at maximum 6000m altitude and reach a maximum speed of 72km/h, automatically decreasing when it detects an obstacle.

More performant remote controller

Otherwise, the remote is a large white plastic case with the usual two joystick setup. The other two buttons on the top are the power button and the “Return home” button which tells the drone to return to its starting point.

The controller is made of plastic and comes with the two joysticks for movement and only two buttons, for switching on the drone, or set it “come bank home”.

It comes with a 5.5 inch 1080p screen which has a brightness of 1000cd/m2, displaying a very clear image and better colors which can be seen even in sunny days. The display runs by default the DJI GO application which can also be downloaded on any smartphone.

Regarding the video streaming, the controller uses the Lightbridge connection which allows full HD streaming at up to 7km distance. Moreover, the OcuSync system eases and improves the handling of the Phantom 4, allowing wireless connection with DJI FPV Goggles for a real FPV flight at maximum speed.
